The Constitution, the Gold Standard

The translation of the Socialist Constitution of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea is based on the official translation of the Constitution with 2013 amendments, released by the Foreign Languages Publishing House in Pyongyang, Korea. This version is not available in the Foreign Languages Publishing House web catalogue.

The translation including 2019 amendments aims to disturb as little of the original language as possible. Changes to the official translation have only been made where the content is clearly different. The official translation was also a valuable source to begin the glossary.

The key change between the official translation of 2014 and the updated translation of 2020 are that the National Defence Commission was replaced with the State Affairs Commission, and the Songun policy was replaced by a division between political and military affairs. How the North is run: the State Affairs Commission is one source of broad analysis; Latest North Korean constitutional revisions are a retreat to the past discusses the import of the most recent constitutional amendments.
